Meta Platforms has acquired experimental AI social network Moltbook, bringing its founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr into the company’s advanced AI division, according to a report by Axios.
The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in mid-March, with Schlicht and Parr set to join Meta Superintelligence Labs on March 16. The unit is led by former Scale AI chief Alexandr Wang and focuses on Meta’s frontier artificial intelligence research.
Moltbook launched earlier this year as a unique social platform designed primarily for autonomous AI agents rather than human users. The platform works similarly to a simplified forum where AI agents can post, comment, and vote on content while humans observe their interactions.
The network was created by Schlicht, known for founding Octane AI, and was built alongside an AI agent framework called OpenClaw that allows users to run local AI assistants capable of handling tasks such as scheduling, file management, and communication.
The platform quickly gained attention within the AI community as thousands of bots began exchanging ideas, debating concepts, and coordinating tasks, offering an early look at how autonomous software agents may interact in future digital ecosystems.
However, researchers have also raised concerns about potential security risks and misuse if such agent-driven networks are not properly controlled. Meta has indicated that existing Moltbook users will still be able to access the platform for now, though its long-term role inside the company remains uncertain.
